What Is Seated Chair Massage? Everything You Need to Know

You may have seen seated chair massage offered at an office wellbeing day, event or festival, but what exactly is it?

Seated chair massage is a short, fully clothed massage treatment carried out while you sit comfortably on a specially designed massage chair. There’s no need to lie down, remove your clothes or use oils, making it particularly well suited to workplaces, events and other shared spaces.

At The Mindful Moments Company, we bring seated chair massage directly to your office, retreat or event, creating an easy way for people to enjoy a moment of relaxation without having to leave the venue.

So, what actually happens during a chair massage?

When you arrive for your treatment, your therapist will invite you to sit on the massage chair. The chair is designed to support your body while allowing the therapist easy access to the areas where people commonly carry tension.

You'll remain fully clothed throughout the treatment.

Once you're comfortable, your therapist will use a variety of massage techniques, working through your clothing to release areas of muscular tension and help you relax.

Depending on the length of your treatment, massage may focus on the:

  • Neck

  • Shoulders

  • Upper and lower back

  • Arms

  • Hands

The treatment is adapted to you, so you can let your therapist know if there is a particular area you'd like them to focus on or anywhere you'd prefer them to avoid.

There is no complicated preparation involved. Simply turn up, take a seat and let your therapist do the rest.

Why is it called 'chair massage'?

Unlike a traditional massage, which usually takes place on a massage table, seated chair massage is performed on an ergonomic massage chair.

The chair supports your body while you lean slightly forward, allowing your therapist to work comfortably on your back, shoulders and neck. It also means the treatment can be performed without the need for a private treatment room.

This makes it particularly practical for workplaces and events where space, time and privacy may be limited.

Do you have to take your clothes off?

No.

One of the simplest things about seated chair massage is that you stay fully clothed.

There are no oils or creams involved, and you don't need to change into a robe or treatment clothing. Your therapist works through your clothing using massage techniques appropriate for a seated treatment.

We do recommend wearing comfortable clothing where possible. Very bulky jumpers, thick jackets or restrictive clothing can make the treatment less comfortable, so lighter layers are ideal.

How long does a seated chair massage take?

Chair massage works particularly well as a shorter treatment because it can be fitted around a busy schedule.

Treatments can be arranged for different lengths depending on your event and requirements. Shorter sessions are ideal for workplaces and larger events, where lots of people may want to take part. Longer sessions can be arranged where you have more time available.

For example, you might have a therapist offering a series of 10–15 minute treatments throughout a working day, or longer individual sessions as part of a retreat or dedicated wellbeing experience.

We'll work with you to create a schedule that makes sense for your group, rather than expecting everyone to fit around a fixed appointment system.

Do I need to book an appointment?

Not necessarily.

For workplace wellbeing days and events, we can organise treatments in different ways depending on the size and format of your event.

For smaller groups, pre-booked appointment slots can work well, ensuring everyone has a dedicated time.

For larger events, we can operate on a more informal basis, with people signing up for available slots throughout the day.

We'll help you decide what works best for your team or guests.

Where can chair massage take place?

Almost anywhere you have a suitable area.

One of the advantages of seated chair massage is that it doesn't require a traditional treatment room. We can set up in an office, meeting room, breakout space, event venue or retreat setting.

We simply need a suitable area where the therapist and massage chair can be positioned comfortably, with enough space for people to move around safely.

This flexibility makes chair massage particularly useful for:

Offices – as part of a wellbeing day, employee perk, team event or workplace wellbeing programme.

Corporate events – giving attendees something enjoyable to do between meetings, presentations or networking.

Retreats – offering guests a relaxing treatment between activities and sessions.

Conferences and exhibitions – creating a dedicated moment of calm in a busy environment.

Private events – adding a wellbeing element to celebrations and gatherings.

What does a massage chair look like?

A massage chair is very different from the chairs you might normally associate with massage.

It is specially designed to position and support your body during the treatment. You sit facing forwards and lean into the chair, with supports for your head, arms and body.

The design allows the therapist to work on your back, shoulders and neck without you needing to lie down.Is seated chair massage suitable for everyone?

Massage isn't suitable for every person or every situation, which is why we carry out appropriate checks before treatment.

Our therapists will ask you a few simple questions before beginning and will adapt or decline treatment where necessary. If you have a particular health concern, injury or medical condition, it's always best to check with your healthcare professional before booking a massage.

Your comfort and safety come first.

What makes chair massage different from a traditional massage?

The biggest difference is the format.

A traditional full-body massage usually takes place on a massage table, involves removing some clothing, using oils and requires a private treatment space. It is generally a longer, more immersive treatment.

Seated chair massage is designed to be short, accessible and easy to fit into everyday life.

You stay dressed.
You stay seated.
You don't need oils.
You don't need a treatment room.
And you don't need to set aside an entire afternoon.

Our massage modality is a blend of acupressure, holistic and shiatsu massage techniques which are designed to be gentle, light to medium pressure and provide ease and relaxation in

It's a simple way to incorporate massage into a working day, event or retreat.
